Lauren Graham Jokes About Fans Who Say Gilmore Girls Raised Them: ‘I Hope There Were Other Adults Around’

The soothing effect of Gilmore Girls transcends species.

The beloved mother-daughter coming-of-age drama holds a special place in Lauren Graham’s heart, but lately, fan reactions have taken an unexpected turn.

“I will say, it’s getting—it can be strange at times,” Graham shared during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“On one hand, people are starting to say, ‘You raised me,'” she said. “And I’m like, ‘I hope there were other adults involved!'”

“Then, on the other hand, you have people who say, ‘Oh, I just have the show on in the background. It puts my dog to sleep. We’re not even listening anymore—it’s just on, like background music.'”

By the time Gilmore Girls creator and showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino offered Lauren Graham the starring role of wisecracking single mother Lorelai Gilmore, the actress had already spent over half a decade working steadily in television. She began with walk-on roles in soaps like All My Children before landing more substantial parts in series such as Good Company and Townies.

But Gilmore Girls fundamentally reshaped Graham’s career and on-screen persona, cementing her as a television icon while also paving the way for a successful writing career.

When Jimmy Fallon asked Graham if she would return to Stars Hollow after 2016’s miniseries revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, she didn’t hesitate.

“I would, yes. I always say yes,” she said. “Because it’s the best part I ever had, and I loved doing it. It was just one of those perfect moments—the right material at the right time with the right writer—and it means so much to me.”

The cast of Gilmore Girls remains so beloved that even 15 years after the show’s seventh season finale, fans still eagerly anticipate reunions featuring Lorelai (Lauren Graham), Rory (Alexis Bledel), Emily (Kelly Bishop), Luke (Scott Patterson), and the rest of the Stars Hollow crew.

As the heart of the series, Graham often finds herself at the center of these highly anticipated reunions. Just last December, she reunited with her on-screen love interest, Luke, for a Walmart commercial and caught up with her former fictional coworker, Michel (Yanic Truesdale), at a Christmas party.

For fans craving even more Gilmore, the series has found a new streaming home on Hulu—while still remaining available in its entirety on Netflix. Additionally, a special holiday collection featuring nine Christmas-themed episodes from across the show’s seven-season run is now available, including the fan-favorite season 2 episode, “The Bracebridge Dinner.”
